Well with the recent bomb of J. Edgar, I have decided to shake up my previous Oscar predictions. It’s sad that one film has made me second guess myself, but hey this is Hollywood! I will stand by some of my previous predictions, but as for the others, I’m jumping ship.

Best Actor in a Leading Role:

Previous Predicition: Leonardo DiCaprio in J. Edgar

New Prediction: George Clooney in The Descendants

After seeing the trailer for J. Edgar, I assumed Leo would be a lock for best actor, but following the reviews and the overall “dry” atmosphere that has followed this film, I have to change my mind. George Clooney in The Descendants looks to be a lock for best actor in a musical or comedy at the Golden Globes, and after hearing all the buzz, I believe he’ll take this momentum right up to the Oscar stage.

Best Actress in a Leading Role:

Previous Prediction: Meryl Streep in The Iron Lady

New Prediction: Meryl Streep in The Iron Lady

At the time of the previous post, I had yet to see the trailer for this film. But in the last week or so, I have finally viewed the full trailer and I truly believe that Meryl Streep is a lock for her 3rd academy award. Rooney Mara in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo will give her some steep competition, but the Academy will most likely award Meryl Streep.

Best Actor in a Supporting Role:

Previous Prediction: Armie Hammer in J. Edgar

New Prediction: Andy Serkis in Rise of the Planet of the Apes

I am jumping ship so fast! Armie Hammer looks horrendous in J. Edgar, he is trying way too hard and looks small compared to the talent of DiCaprio. Armie Hammer was amazing in The Social Network, and I’m sure he will one day receive a nomination but I find it unlikely he’ll find it in J. Edgar. The controversial pick of Serkis is where I find myself standing. Technically Serkis relies solely on technology to give this performance, but behind the scenes evidence proves that Serkis was 100% convincing as the ape Caesar. If you haven’t seen this film yet, I highly recommend it.

Best Actress in a Supporting Role:

Previous Prediction:Jessica Chastain in The Tree of Life.

New Prediction: Jessica Chastain in The Tree of Life.

After finally viewing this film I can absolultey stand by this prediciton. Chastain was remarkable as Mrs. Obrien, the mother of three boys struggling between their love for their mother and their love for their father. She is a free spirit with amazing talent, and I hope she continues on this level of success.

Best Director

Previous Prediction: Terrence Malick for The Tree of Life

New Prediction:Alexander Payne for The Descendants

I had to change here after seeing Tree of Life. Although the film was spectacular, it was noteworthy because of its actors. Brad Pitt, Jessica Chastain, and every child actor in this film were perfect. I wasn’t crazy about Mallick’s approach to the film and I know I’m not the only one to think that. This feels like the year for the Descendants, it has the same vibe Sideways had 6-7 years ago and I believe Payne will bring home the Oscar.

Best Picture:

Previous Prediction: The Tree of Life

New Prediction: The Tree of Life

I’m so torn on this pick, but I know that Tree of Life has the legs to carry it to the finish line. It will find steep competition in the french film “The Artist” as well as “The Descendants” but I think Academy members will look past the abstract of the film, and discover the beauty in it.
